if Gnob offered "gift cards" that allowed the gifting of an item to another player. Too close to making open trading a possibility, but I think it would be cool.

I just don't understand why BP won't add trading system to the game :( Most of the other mmporg games have trading systems!

    It would hurt their profit.

Trading systems in games are usually flawed and most lead to trade of game currency for actual money. Three obvious things come as a consequence: the game owner loses money because he no longer holds monopoly on game currency (which can be bought from farmers on e-bay). The second thing is obviously farming, done by bots or sweatshop workers in China, either is profitable for the farm owner. And the third one is devaluation of game currency, because it can be bought below price from farmers (if it wasn't below price nobody would buy it from them), which leads to devaluation of in-game items bought legally (because you can buy 100 gems worth of ander if you buy from farmers as opposed to 50 or 20 gems worth if you bought it legally).
Long but I thought it needed to be pointed out.

    Really? lol
Do you know how much time it takes to farm a decent amount of andermant and 'sell' it? Even with bots it wouldn't profit anyone.

How many people are willing to sell andermant as cheaply as you claim? Who would sell their gems for 1/2 or 1/5 of the initial price?

Did you know that game currency doesn't have to be trade-able? Only-item Trade would be fine. Items aren't bought so heavily with andermant (maybe 1 or 2 magics, usually) All trade would do is recycle items and create an economy for the game. One in which farmed items can be exchanged but andermant, gems, and such can only be bought.

The OP was only talking about items... and not trading them, but instead gifting them. How does that hurt the game owner?

Have you played any other mmo rpg game with a trading system? In SWTOR they have to limit it cause it was costing them more then they were profiting, ofc ppl would sell it less, what would be the whole point of it? Even gems with price from 6400 to 5400 would make a large difference if you were buying a 6400 gem, wouldn't you go after the same 1 but costing 1k andermants less? That would collapse gems value as much as in game currency value over time. Look at WoW, ppl make living from farming gold and items, even if in-game currency wouldn't be tradable still they would lose a big amount of profit on open market system, at some point you would be buying gems for e-money and there would be almost no purpose for andermants.

Yeah because you could make a living farming andermant. For my previous post to make sense you have to consider all my points as one. No one can get that much andermant. So, those people who are selling gems for cheap... where did they get the gems? They paid for them. They paid for them full price. So they're selling them for a cheaper price... Bigpoint already got the money... would it make a difference if that guy kept his gems or not? He's already paid for them. He could delete his character and it would be pretty much the same thing as selling his gems for such a low price. I also mentioned that there wouldn't be many people buying gems for 6400 and selling them for 4k... why would they? It doesn't make any sense. Not that many people have so many gems that they don't need... and they could only have so much. No one in their right mind would buy so many gems to sell them for cheaper. AND I said that andermant doesn't have to be trade-able so how does it make any sense that people SELL gems for ANDERMANT? How are they getting this andermant if it can't be traded?

A trading system wouldn't do anything to hurt bigpoint... it would just promote a game economy. Almost all MMORPGs have an economy and they do just fine. Have you ever played RS? Such a poop game... graphics poop, content poop, community poop, support team poop, suggestion? LOL like they give two poops, and yet it lasted sooooo long. It had a trade system... in fact, it revolved around that trade system. Grand Exchange or whatever it was called... and it did better than fine. It did better than it should have with so little to offer. Now, sure, I understand DSO is a way different game... but it is an MMORPG nonetheless. Bigpoint can even use the trade system to profit. Make buyable statuses that allow more simultaneous trades than w/o payment. And whole bunch of other stuff.

If this sounded like an attack, it wasn't. I'm just tired of people claiming a trade system would hurt the game because they believe it did so to other games.

In the past, I have described in detail how an andermant trade system could be taken advantage of. Here is the short version. A player has a main account. They then create a new account and receive 600 ander to start with. The player puts something like a set of white boots up for trade for 600 ander (A trade that no sane person would go for) on their main. The player then goes to the alt and buys the boots. Voila, 600 ander in less than 5 min of work. Before people claim that checking IP addresses could prevent this, all this would mean is that the person would have to use a service that changes their IP addess or work with a friend going back and forth.

On the other hand, I feel that a Draken based trading system could work for the benefit of both the players and BP. Draken has to be farmed from events so creating a brand new character would't be an exploit for this and Bots could not survive in event maps. Additionally, it would encourage maximum participation in events for the purpose of getting draken and people might spend more ander to be able to get more draken.
Because draken is much harder to get, if someone offered a polished ruby for 500 draken, you'd have to think about it as opposed to if a ruby were offered for 5400 ander... the two currency don't have a direct correlation so a brand new economy would emerge.

The trick is not to just find flaws in someones idea, but to offer a viable alternative. And if you ask me, this it the only thing that would work well.

Hmmm, we're all off-topic. The original post was a Gifting option on the Gnob, not trade. And we all jumped to trade for some reason. I say gifting is actually a nice idea. I have a couple of items that some peeps might want and I don't need.

I began in the middle of the this thread then worked my way back to the original post. This is not about trading... it's about "gifting." Giving something to another player without getting anything in return. I really don't see the problem. Sure the obvious exploit is taking stuff from a toon of yours you don't like a giving it to another of your toons so BP can't sell the same thing twice. I do not think this would be a deal breaker for BP's finances. In fact it could generate some extra interest in the game that could improve their bottom line in the long run.

Howerer, that being said there is still a big elephant in the room nobody sees. The problem is technical. One of the benefits of no player item ineraction is not just the financial side but a security issue.

As soon as player item interaction enters the game the hackers will swarm this place looking for ways to exploit it (and they will find them.)

The real money that is made from exploiting the trading systems in games does not come from uber-farmers selling things cheap or players bypassing the ingame economy. It comes from... well I'ld better stop here ;) The largest holding company in the U.S. for third party sites that sell items for games knows what I'm talking about and I'm sure BP does also.

It's too bad really. It would help build a closer knit community here. If BP wants to put up the money for extra staff for security I think I would be a great idea.

You yet again assume that every1 buys gems, you obviously don't understand that some ppl farm for them, and also those they don't need they could sell cheap in open trading system, here everything revolves about andermants if you dont see what could be the consequences of open trading market system i am not so sure you understand the whole system and monopole in this game.

That was just 1 example none of them would go after gems specifically but they would get the as they farm for other loots to sell too.

lol.. I don't understand that some people farm for gems? How do you think I got my gems? I have 12 polished attack gems so far. (sold 2 polished onyxes a million years ago bc never used them... so 14 technically) Do you think I'd ever sell them? Do you think that all that work I did to get these gems was easy? And that I could do it again in a few days and make profit? No, I can't. So, no, people wouldn't benefit from farming and selling gems.

Yes, everything does revolve around andermant in this game.

You don't seem to understand... as if my words can't enter your thick skull. Andermant doesn't have to be trade-able. It can be an item-only trade system. Exchange wand for wand, or wand for some other piece of armor...etc, etc.

Well this thread is still about gifting, not trading, but I will expand on what I was hinting about in my previous post. The third party sites that sell items for mmo's for the most part are not supplied by farmers. They get their inventory from hackers.

The one thing that these hackers need to get started is player-to-player interaction. If it was simply a matter of farming then these third party sites would already be selling geared and leveled up toons for this game. I'm talking on a large scale here.

Anyway I have been thinking about this since I first read this thread and I think I figured out a way gifting could work. Basically you would give the item and the player name of the recipient to an NPC. Then it could be picked up by your friend from that NPC. I think this would keep the security hole closed (but in all honesty I don't know how sophisticated my former aquaintances have got so I'm not sure.)

I still feel that gifting is a great idea. I can think of many of my friends who would still be playing this game if I could have helped them with items I did not need.

If you allow 'gifting' then somebody on e-bay will offer a return gift for a specific gift... Trade.
