    I don't know if you all remember from the old forums, but I enjoy mathematics. I put together an equation (with some help from the community) that accurately predicted what % damage reduction you would get for a certain armor value.

    Well, today, I want to give you all an equation to calculate a metric that will help you compare weapons. It involves Base damage, attack speed, critical hit chance, and critical damage. After this you will still be able to argue the value of having a shield or not having a shield, but the question of changes in speed or crit will be be a matter of fact, not opinion.

    One caveat before we begin: Because crit chance changes based on a curve, an extra 200 crit for one player may not have the same impact as 200 crit would for another. Therefor, I recommend you use your character stats for all calculations. This will also mean that a single weapon could be better for one player than another based on the user's other items. For example, because of Cloaked Wrath's high crit damage, a player with high crit rate will see better results than a player with lower crit rate. (DUH, but I have to say it).

    Well, here it is, my equation.

    First, we define the variables.

    DPS= An averaged DPS and our point of comparison.
    D1=Low end damage
    D2=High end damage
    S= Attack Speed
    R= Critical hit rate (in decimal format, not percentage. ex, 48% would be .48)
    C= Critical damage (Also in decimal format. ex, 237% would be 2.37)

    [IMG]

    The first part is rather simple, it is simply your average damage. Second is the attack speed. I'm sure that that part makes sense. The last part takes into account how often you crit and how much extra damage you do when you do. If you want a more detailed explanation of the last part, just ask... or you can just trust me.

    With that equation, my averaged DPS is as follows.

    ((1097+1451)/2)*(1.35)*(1+.3575(2.1736-1))
    1274*1.35*(1+.3575(1.1736))
    1274*1.35*1.419562

    ≈2441.5 Damage/Second

    Out of curiosity (a theme with me if you haven't guessed by now) I calculated the average DPS for someone with Cloaked Wrath (Stats from here, no one can argue that LORD_DEMONS isn't an awesome DK)

    ((709+781)/2)*1.82*(1+.6641(2.75-1))
    745*1.82*(2.162175)

    ≈2931.7 Damage/Sec

    So, the answer is that a High End DK (Verrrrrrry High End) with Cloaked Wrath has more DPS than little old F2P me, but I'm sure that a High End 2H DK would be higher than that... Looking at you GamesShortCut.

    I hope that some of you will share what you would get for average DPS... see if your numbers are as good as you think or if you just thought you had it good.

    Anyway Iam far away from "high end" ^^

    No kidding!?!?!
    Ouch!

    And what do you mean far from high end... you have most of your gear up to 48-49! That is most player's dream!

    That's Lordodemons old DPS. If the lastest stats he posted is true, he's DPS is now 4468.

    Of course a high end 2h DK will have more DPS with the cost of having bad defensive stats. Without the healing for DK's you would properly not see 2-handed DK's in this game lol.

    2H is after what I think good for boss, but bad in PvP. I laugh everytime. :)

    I am an archer, lvl 37, and with valetia quiver (the most offensive one combo I have), my DPS = 598

    Faaaaaar from you DK... :(

    Interesting find. I particularly like the 3 buttons at the bottom. Though the number is just different enough that I'm wondering what the difference between the equations are.

    Don't feel bad. First off, you are a LVL 37. We are talking endgame... not just LVL 45, but LVL 45's that have been tweaking their stats to perfection since LVL 45 was released. Also, you can't compare a DK directly to a Ranger or Spellweaver's damage because a RA or SW with identical DPS would actually do more damage because of the classes skills do higher percentages of the base damage... for example, the highest damage attack a DK has is 200% where as a Spellweaver has an attack that does 400% base damage

    EDIT: Well, this equation seems to have come in handy for me. I wanted to check if the damage/speed/crit trade offs I'd experience if I used the second part of the Dragonache set... turns out that I would lose about 90 DPS average if I were to use the necklace and the first ring together. It turns out my damage would be almost unchanged, but the speed I'd gain from the ring wouldn't counter the loss of crit damage and crit chance from the items I'd end up replacing.

    isn't that just exactly the same formula as used in DPI?

    I'm not sure if i understand it correctly, is this math thing made to fit using a skill which deals 100% base dmg?, or what?

    i think is just for a single hit with no skills, mastered skills either a class...

    Correct. This could then be multiplied by an attack's percentage to find the average DPS for a particular attack. This number simply serves as a baseline to determine the effectiveness of a change in your offensive stats. If you add speed, remove crit, and add a little crit damage, my equation tells you if you make a net gain or net loss in average DPS.

    Depending on when this was posted, it is probably based off of my work on the old forums, found here. If you look at post 2, you will see the equation is the same, the variables are just named differently. The work above looks like a chart of the variable I called "K"

    That means that it is related, but not the same. It is for calculating %Crit chance, % Damage reduction from armor, blocking and resistance... the like and if graphed, it shows the diminishing returns you receive from armor, block, and resist. The only way this could factor into the equation I posted in the first post in this thread is if I replaced the % chance of crit with the equation in your referenced chart and forced people to also factor in their level and the constant from the table. Much easier is to just have them use the % chance of crit from their character stats instead of making them calculate it using their level and the variable in the chart. I will admit that if I created an excel sheet to do the calculations for me just based off of the crit hit value, it would be most handy to not have to calculate all those values myself.

    diminishing returns? are you sure about that?
    I haven't calculated it myself but i'm pretty sure that the armor/effective health relationship is linear. otherwise each armor point would be more effective than the last. so there's no such a "diminishing return". but as I said, this is a guess, i haven't checked it yet.

    i don't like this DPI formula. you can easiliy boost your result by enhancing attack speed and yet it won't help you much running around with 2.30 speed and 600 base dmg (especially if you consider essences and mana/conc/whatever ressource). maybe there should be given a certain time period divided by attack speed. during 1 second your damage output will be the same regardless whether you have an attack speed of 1.10 or 1.90.

    2227 for me with my 2h... but that means damage per second calculus?
    i noticed playing with the formula that ruby and sapphires are more effective to increase that

    _Baragain_ that dates back to 2011 :D

    but actually it isn't necessary to love maths, be a genius or struggle, the formula itself is written in cubic characters right below your nose (client folder)

    those who played beta known this by so long...

    Yeah, 1 handed wapon for arena is a must and 2 handed works better for farming, also 1 handed better choice for batteling big boss like distructor.
