This is pure speculation, but I've been pretty successful in testing it.

I noticed that every once in a while, such as the first time u play DSO everyday, there is a high chance of monsters and bosses dropping rare items, such as uniques or legendaries.

I use this to farm bosses like Heredur, Khalys, Herald, Sigris, and Gorga, and I usually get consistent drops. (Legendary on first, second kill, or third kill, blues and occasionally purples after) Also the Dragon High Priest in Stalgard for level appropriate drops and mystic cubes.

I've farmed countless shields from Heredur this way, both on my DK and my pvp toons.

    Anyone else get this?

they made it so the first time u encounter a boss u will get a legend the first time, gorga drops blue all the time pw map knights drop extro all the time,,so every new boss u kill will give u leg or unique, but only the first time you kill them. :)

I can add to what you have experienced. I do think there is a time penalty that reduces drop chances with longer playtimes or, more probable, a drop bonus (like Rest xp) during the first few hours/minutes you've logged in. This is a good psychological programming trick--get something cool--play more. The fact that they programmed the first kill bonuses on the bosses indicates the mechanic to reward with drops based on kill count is already in the game in some way. On some of my alts if I let them sit for a few days without logging them in, they seem to get a nice item or two the first few hours. It happens too often to be coincidence.

It does not mean you cant get a Unique at the end of 48 hour binge, but experience says you are right on with a higher chance early after a login.

It's may be related to primacy effect; you remember best what happens first. The rest fades back in comparison.
So if you have a really good first experience, you discount the bad experiences that follow, and stay in the game a little longer.
Manipulation is a really good way to mask the reduction in average drops over time. You can see what is really happening, if you keep track of your sales at the vendor, or the glyphs you get at the smith.

Some days are better than others; drop schedules vary over time.

DSO may still use an "addiction inhibition" program, that gives you a penalty if you play too long. That was the scuttlebutt some time ago.
It could have gone rogue, not that a designer or programmer would notice.

Or maybe DSO reduced the drops, just to make us hungry for Lor'Tac. LOL

    Any other views?

So you are saying random is not really a random. And I'm with you :) I did have the first hour better drop experience, and I have recently got my first riddle, and first and second mortis mask in 50 mortis kills after two week vacation. Ofc I have killed him 1k times with no luck before.

This may have been discussed in other threads but... what about the constant drop decrease over long periods of time (months, years) for old chars ?
My char is only 6 months old but some who have been playing for years have said the drop is very bad compared to newbies' drop.
And if this is true, what would the reason behind this be? Why would bp make old players gain less for the same work the newbies do? Could it be because they don't want the old players to keep on increasing at the same rate? It seems that the growth rate is not linear, but just like the blockrate and the armour... the more time you put, the less rewards you get.
But this could be just speculation, I don't think it's easy to test this.

^ I'd guess, drops get worse cuz older players are more invested in the game, thus less likely to quit when frustrated, and devs can use that to their advantage (eg, not getting what you want? Buy it). Newbies, otoh, might be quicker to say Screw This and walk away if drops were as bad for them as it is for oldies.

    Interesting points all around!

But today I killed Gorga for the first time in months, and right off the bat I got a Deep Sea Star Amulet. Now that I think back, last week when I decided to pay Herald a visit, I also got Tegan's Suit of Armor on first kill.

Perhaps there is a mob-specific timer on each boss, which increases drop rates over time?

As a side note, now that I have 2 Treasures of the Deep, I might actually consider looking for the other 3, hopefully getting some Keen stuff to keep my lonely pair of boots company in my locker.

Have you guys had any luck with those sets, and what was your experience finding them? I'm told to just grind Temple Sector over and over, but in light of these new events, maybe I should just lay low for a while :D

There was an update recently that changed boss drops such that first time you kill a boss after the update you were guaranteed a legendary or unique.

My war is 4 years old.. and i "feel" "MANY" times what you say... i completed keen set just less than 1 year ago... killed mortis and kaly more than 1k each... no cloacked wrath neither mortis mask... some 5 months old players (friends) already got mortis mask... some of them get 1k anders in single runs of Q3... i get close to 100 (if i'm veeeery lucky) anders in a full q3 run, some times even 0 anders from a full q3 run... i opened close to 200 legendary 2 handed weapons until get a decent weapon... ok a newby war i know had (almost) almost same weapon in his 3rd try... i think drop is influenced by the age of the character, AND by the money you put in the game...

I am called the lucky one by all who play with me alot. It does seem that all my toons out drop people I play with. I am always saying woot leg or WOW this ... I farmed 100 lockpicks and I got a leg ring level 13 that was +5+5+5+4 damage. this was at the end of my day during the great Dwarven heist event. Now I have also gotten the quest chests faster than most I play with. All this is random but it sometimes seems like I am getting the better end of the stick most times. I am helpful and I tend to help people a little longer than my patients allows me at times. I have to remember not everyone in the world are the same experanced wise in games. I did countless spiders I have gotten most of the uniques from the spider from kill number 8 12 and 25 for that day. 8 kills is also the number for the undamaged cap for 2 of my toons and for one of my toon on a sever I no longer play on was drop number 8 of mortis for the end time wand. Granted by the time I aquire the wand it was just melt and I had a :c face. Anyone else notice a patern with all toon on you account irregardless of server...

nothing is random imo, like there's a variable that determines the luck factor and it's random every time you log or it's specified to change every so, imo

That would be more of a philosophical debate there. Simply put english just means no predesposed item will drop. i.e. kill a rusty bucket and he will always give you a green hands.
