The forum gets a lot of severely noob questions, showing a lack of very basic information on how to navigate on the main page, search and work the forums, whatever.
The beginning character walk through does give a little learn-as-you-go, but people still miss stuff anyway. Not everything is common knowledge. Missing pieces end up eating away at everyone's time.
Please install a link to basic features and benefits, a beginner's operating manual if you will. Put it where beginner's are sure to see and use it.

    +1 to that.

Most of us have seen those threads with basic game info about multiple aspects of the game, but they can't be accessed easily if they're lost in the forum (plus that some parts need updating). Maybe updating & adding them somewhere together where they could be seen with ease would be good, though even so most newbies would probably just skip the read, because they be like...

    Hello @Darwarren ,

Such a thing already exists. It's called the DSO Guide. ;) Indeed, there is even a Basics thread that pretty much recaps the tutorial mechanics and so on.

If you have suggestions for improving the visibility of the guide (that are possible to implement), I would be glad to hear them.

    Cheers,
    Anyki

put it in as a link
    "Beginners guide"
button just above the "play now" button on the page which comes after logging in or maybe on the top right corner, whoever is new would end up exploring it.

Then it shouldn't be tough to put a hot link on a login page.
You might also try a Guide Book, in game, in one of the beginners maps, on a path or table, etc.
The point was that the players are connecting to the information. Specifically, noobs do not worship at the Forums, that way doesn't work. I guess I should have been more specific. Indeed, indeed.

    ok;)

I don’t know why you guys still search for ideas. 30 years ago game designers searched for ideas in RPGs. So there already was a huge variety of ideas in the 90s and all the bad ones are nearly sorted out.
Tooltips are nice for simple games, so not for DSO. Nothing wrong with a few pop up arrows for flash games or video console RPG, but you are suggesting a certain straight forward game style that DSO simply does not have.

Very early on smart gamers start to realize that many important tips will never pop up in DSO.
    How does blocking work?
What does the number on speed mean?
    What gems do exist?
    What are those traders for?
Should I level up fast or slow?
And so on and so far.

You can’t cover that with a tutorial. 12 year olds are not reading the texts no matter how big you write them and have forgotten them until the tutorial ends. So simply do what all the other good games did and create a help file in game where players can look stuff up in their own pace. In game meaning here in game, not in the forum.

Players that hate reading and tutorials in general will not mind and all the other will thank you for it.
For example look up “Attack Speed” and read:
“This value shows how fast your character can attack in general. Most skills however have different speeds, so attack speed is just an estimation how fast some of those skills are. Please note that not all small increases in attack speed have an effect on the game. All percentage bonuses on attack speed are based on the speed of your weapon. Attack speed also increases your consumption of essences and is particularly important against other players.”

It does not bother people, it does not make the game bigger and there no chance of complex bugs with this. So just bring a look up menu on the quest tab and save so many hours for staff and players of explaining.

    Morinphen and Darwarren like this.
