I've tried with Firefox and IE, and can't get past the "download" in either. It was nice being able to play in browser, but I'm okay with the client log in and it hasn't changed the game play for me.

I have a mac, and I really only want to use the browser. Are you sure it won't work if I have a Mac?
Man, if it doesn't work, Macs really limit a lot of things.

You can play only on Mac Client ... not in browser.

Solution: I had this same problem so I updated Java, also I went to url: chrome://flags/#enable-npapi and enabled NPAPI as this is now required for Chrome to run Java from what I understand. But the play in browser option still wouldn't work so this is what I had to do:
(in Chrome browser, using Windows 8.1) Go to the chrome menu near the top right of your browser window> Settings> scroll all the way down> Advanced Settings> under Privacy click the Content Settings button> scroll down until you see Plug-ins & click the Manage Exceptions button> type in drakensang.com & choose Allow. Now try to 'play now' in browser either it will now run or a pop-up appears mentioning plug-ins being blocked, but you will now finally have the option to click a puzzle piece icon at the top right in the address bar, click it and choose always allow plugins for the site.

I was able to play on my Firefox browser until I recently updated my java and now when I click the final play button and go to "The game needs your permission to run" and even though my settings are to "Continue Allowing" that is as far as it will let me go. I have reinstalled Firefox and my Java but nothing works so now I have to use the Client.

I can only use browser play on my XP box. (which did not make the game run any faster or smoother so screw that) On my Win 7 laptop i can only use the thinclient as above, cannot play in browser, clicking PLAY NOW takes me to the download client page. I use Firefox on both machines.

    You probably meant eggsbox. :)

Q: What is the reason that players can't get past "download page"?
A: The reason are players themselves. They don't read what others have said ... if only they would read it first ... they wouldn't have any problems at all.

Ehm dude! I personally have the same problem and I HAVE read the whole thread AND tried all the different solutions with no luck. No need to assume that people don't try just because the help that's been given doesn't work. One of my favourite things about this game was that I could play it in my browser so unfortunately it seems like I'll have to give it up.

(don't hate on my grammar or spelling, English is not my native tounge)

Do you have Java plugin for browser installed on your PC ... and given permission to run?

Similar problems were caused by bad Java updates. " Always allow" must be checked in add-ons/settings.
Please search forums for Java, or see
    Login Issues, Firefox

Servers crashed earlier today. Nothing on our side will fix that.

In that case you have to open the Java Control Panel and manage them manually ...
or uninstall Java ... after you have uninstalled Java ... delete the Java folder in C:\Users\YourUsername\AppData\LocalLow\Sun ... then install Java again.
Just uninstalling Java is not enough because the previous settings remains to your PC.

Hello! I will post the steps that I made to play DRO from Mozilla. FYI, I'm using Mozilla 26.0 on Win XP.

First of all you will need to use the Default User Agent, others will not work and it will just redirect you to the download client page.

Update your java if you didn't do that already.
Then open Add-ons and go to Plugins and choose (I preferred choosing) Ask to Activate on the Java plugins.

Go to drakensang.com and Click PLAY NOW.

Login or create an account if you don't have one.

You'll probably have to select the server to play on, but since I already had it selected... I don't remember when I had to do that.

The PLAY NOW button will appear, so...click it.

It will redirect you to the game page with the message that the game needs your permission to run.

Soon, the Activate Java Platform will appear, so allow it (Allow and Remember if you don't wanna activate it every time you wanna play the game).

Another Java window will appear for allowing to run the application, so click run (you can tick the box so you won't have to do it every time you want to play).

And VOILA! The game will now start to load.

So... in the end it's not a pure browser game since it will download the client and the other resources (in \Temp\DSOClient\) of aprox. 990Mb.
If your system is able to run the game... Great! If not...

I did this on my PC, and since I've already tried the client it gave me the same error.

Tomorrow I'll post a screenshot from playing it on Mozilla with the laptop (since this one is able to run the game).

So... I hope that this will help some of you.
    Cheers!

    --MERGED--

    Since the edit doesn't work...
Here's the proof that it works in the same Mozilla 26.0, Win XP.

If you can't see "Play now" button and have 64-bit OS and Java: Nowadays Firefox is 32-bit even if you run it on 64-bit OS (unless you get Firefox Nightly). So what worked for me (sadly only on Windows) was installing 32-bit JRE. You can put your java plugin to test on http://java.com site.
