    Hi all!

I go through a lot of junk items while leveling. Is it more worth it to sell these for coin, or melt them down? My guess is that the numbers of both of these options won't add up to too much @ level cap, but what are your opinions?

Secondly, is it worth keeping & upgrading low level gems? Or, should I just plug them into sockets, and forget them? I know that, in EDIT for instance, combining low level gems isn't worth the gold cost, because the drop rate of higher-level gems is so good, later in the game.

    Thoughts and opinions appreciated!

You can take gems out of items. As a result, you can use a white item with 4 or 5 slots to covert a single inventory slot into a 5 gem holder spot.

I save and craft up all of my gems and store them in gem holders. Gems are worth keeping as they havw significant permanent value from level expansion to level expansion.

    Hey there @Gearic ,

For the very first question, I would say: depends on what you really need.

Normally, people tend to sell items that are improved or magic ones. Once extraordinaries and legendaries and, of course, uniques are nice items to a potential good crafting experience (extraordinaries and legendaries in this last case), people normally keep them or melt them (higher value of glyphs of power according to level, until 8400 on lvl 50 for legendaries items).

Anyhow, there are people that are seeking gold (exactly to crafting 2.0 or to complete cloak quest, for example) and, for that reason, it is better for them to sell those items in exchange for gold.

About your second question, you can do it like you wrote: keep them and upgrade them. When you have 3 stones from the same tier and type (flawed+flawed+flawed) then you will get a splintered one. Tier drop from stones was improved some releases before, but it is not guarantee that you will have better tier in the future.
If you have no inventory space, do like our friend told. If you, for example, find out any item with 4 slots opened (even a white one), this item can work as a gem holder, which is pretty nice!

If you have any more doubt related to gems, just click HERE and read - it also includes information related to gems slots costs ;)

    Have fun, jeweler ;)

I always craft my gems... and before I have enough to craft... i keep all the same gems in an item so it is more organized. If you have gems spilling out your ears but not enough to craft... Find a green item with 4 slots and put one more in it and you have saved 4 inventory spaces. Repeat as needed.
Low level i mostly do coin, because cloak of power is so costly... and repairing and combining gems and teleporting, etc. :)

    Hello Gearic,
In the low levels I think its better that you sell them all or sell items up to extraordinary at least and melt the legendary items. On the higher levels I usually melt extraordinary and above items and sell green and blue items. If you are planning on leveling up quickly then it doesn't really matter what you do because low level items do not amount to much.

Never throw the gems away. You can plug them into sockets if you have any open and when you are done with that item, take off the gems before discarding the item. You can do that via the gem merchants. The highest tiers of gems do not drop like in other games so its better that you keep them and craft them only when you don't have enough sockets to use them. (Friendly reminder: You are not allowed to mention other games by name in this forum ;) )

As for melt/sell of items I am not keeping (for crafting, etc), my current approach is sell green items above 20 silver and blue items above 80 silver. I melt everything else.

Thanks to everyone for your answers! This is all very helpful. It's genius in its simplicity, to store gems in item slots!

This gets to exactly the core of my question. Thanks a ton!

Thanks for this. I very quickly skimmed through the rules stickies, so I guess I should give them another look. :p I wonder why this is the case, though. I think it can often be helpful, especially in suggestion threads, to reference similar systems in other games.

ROFL! I wish! All gems are valuable and gem holders are a must. All my gems are flawless or higher, and I still get excited when I get a random drop of a flawed or splintered gem, particularly when it is an offensive gem like a ruby or sapphire.

I too follow something like Novadude for what I sell and what I melt. I just extended it to exos and sell those worth more than 4 gold (which is 2H weapons with no relative stats like % damage).
