Essence drops from mobs, piggies and neat amphorae are negligible. You get some from main and event challenge progress bars, but you >must< concentrate on crafting essence and/or running the repeatable quests which give you big or small stick sacks that contain (among other things) event essence.

I modified my approach early on in the challenge: Instead of killing challenge-enhanced mobs in M2 / M3, I conserved event essence to use exclusively on the giant worms in M4 (Castle sewer). (Side benefit: As I'm not killing event essence-hungry mobs, so am getting 100% of challenge progress from M4 Toxic Death Worms, I don't need the challenge drop buffs ... saving me two storage spots in my inventory / locker).

You'll also note that the drop / availability of essence crafting items was inconsistent. The Rat Lures dropped from virtually every rat master (or whatever those sorcerors in M2 [Harbor sewer] are called), as well as the other random possibilities (mobs, neat amphorae, piggies). The Nightglow Lillies were visible pickups throughout M2, plus the random drops.

However, Andermagic Powder and Sewer Parasites did not have a semi-guaranteed drop, no special designated mob or visible placement, so collecting them depended solely on random drops.

All 4 items could drop randomly in M1, M2 and M3. However, the Powder and the Parasites dropped more frequently from M3.

I have enough left over Powder for one crafted essence stack, enough leftover Lures for 20 stacks, and enough Lillies for 10 stacks (I may have the Lures and Lillies reversed).

I also found that certain components of the craftable M4 Valve "key" dropped more readily than others: I have 19 extra Valve Handles from the Harbor, and 3 or 4 each of extra Valve Springs and Valve Gates from the Crypt, as Valve Stem drops from the Harbor were rare for me.

Dungeon-specific Valve components drop once per dungeon from champion mobs (I could have sworn I had a string of Crypt runs with no drops, but I may have simply not noticed auto-pickup from some of the smaller champions as opposed to the Pet Maniac and the Puppeteer), but can also drop from piggies in either M2 or M3 (I even dropped a few full Valves from piggies).

So, on Challenge days when the poison gas was in the Harbor, I farmed the Crypt for Powder and especially Parasites, and incidentally Valve Springs and Valve Gates. On Challenge days when the gas was in the Crypt, I farmed the Harbor for Valve Handles and especially Valve Stems (and incidentally picked up more Lures and Lillies). And, of course, on every single day, I farmed the Fairgrounds for sewer keys.

When I finally picked up a Valve Stem (or occasionally dropped an entire Valve from a piggie in M2 or M3), I would craft a Valve and make a run at M4 ... if I had essence. If I was out of essence, I just kept farming.

As for the repeatables, either of bag stick sacks give you 500 100% event essence, plus other stuff. The one repeatable only required x # of M2 and/or M3 dungeon runs to release citizens (randomly placed # of "cocoons"), so happened incidentally to farming runs. The other repeatable took longer to complete as it required mob kills (M1-M3), champion kills (M2/M3), and Toxic Death Worm kills (M4) ... the latter requirement meant you had to have and use essence (for the Toxic Death Worms), so wasn't something you'd want to concentrate on achieving. In fact, after opening one of each, I just ended up holding onto the bag sticks. Most of what they contain is useful only for the main event, not the Challenge. Assuming the event rolls around again in the near future (before I quit the game ;)), I'll open some of the bag stick sacks, probably not start playing until the shortly before the Challenge, and try to blow through both main and Challenge progress bars quickly and simultaneously (the chief limiting factor being sewer keys ... I may farm M1 a bit these last couple of days to gather a supplies of those).

That is, if I play the event at all in the future. Aside from 1 small gem bag and 4 amphora keys (yawn, and yawn again), plus the pet achievement of securing a 2nd rat for the Collector's Bag (zzzzzz ... I doubt I'll ever mount another rat; they will simply gather dust in my Collection), the entire event offers a few draken and a couple of resistance runes. Pardon me, they bear the much less valuable enchantment of improved resistance on this item.

This, despite the fact that I liked the varied layouts of M2 and M3 (M1 was a monotonous rectangular bore for the most part, a necessary evil to get to M2 & M3), found the champions from M2 (the Peeler anyway; the swamp monster boss was very uninspired and presented zero challenge) and M3 a good change of pace, and didn't struggle with M4 (... confession: I ran everything on Normal difficulty ), and eventually even found those passive-aggressive rats charming.

Rip another event, soley based on the uninspired rewards?

Wow. You were getting drops needed to craft. Lucky you. Me not so lucky.
    • 8 Fairground (M1?) runs and killed 50+ Rat Masters = 2 Rat lures. One run had 11 Rat Masters. Minimum 3 Masters in lowest run.
    • Got 1 powder
    • Got 2 parasites
    • Got 10+ Lillies from Harbor (M2?). This was the only part that I could consistently get.
At those rates, I was never going to craft essences.

Killing the Rat Masters in M2 (Harbor) should consistently yield Rat Lures. Anything that drops in M1 (Fairgrounds) drops at a low, random rate. Sorry for not making that distinction clear.

M1 is chiefly for sewer key drops; you'll get incidental gear drops, extremely rare essence, and varied amounts of Powder, Parasites, Lures and Lillies from mobs and neat amphorae there (plus andermant, ancient wisdom, coins, gems, even single draken). You will not find any Valves or Valve components in M1 (there are no champion monsters or piggies in that sewer).

The bulk of your essence crafting materials must be farmed from M2 & M3. All of your Valves / Valve crafting materials must be farmed in M2 & M3 (from champions and from piggies ... I don't recall Valve-stuff dropping from the neat amphorae).

    -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-

As for the repeatable quests with the bag stick sacks as rewards, M1 mobs do count toward the 2,500 mob-kill requirement for the one quest, but you'll still need to go to M2 and/or M3 to complete most of the requirements for either of those repeatable quests (plus M4 for one of the repeatables).

They are not difficult. They are easier than normal mode map 4 worms.

Howerver I don't know why there are worms in maps 2 and 3 at all. They don't drop anything and are easily ignored so why have them ?

You just need to kill one for the achievement.:D
The rest are a waste of essences.

Don't forget, there are certain skills + talent combos that do damage with no essence usage. For example, if you are a dk, banner of war + 3 point talent allows you to do 30% base damage as fire damage for 10 seconds. Depending on your build and which map you select, you might be able to gather the mobs, and clear virtually all the gathered mini mobs with banners of war and use up no event essence while doing it - I have been using that on my dk and 100% essence on m3 normal while farming piggies, valves, and essence crafting materials.

You impacted the special essence mobs without event essence? I could slow them down with my thicket of thorns or net (yes, I'm a ranger), but no damage ... I believe almost all of our skill deal physical damage, with a few skills doing poison damage. I'll go test but, pretty certain I have no recourse but to use event essence.

CONFIRMED: Rangers >must< kill special event mobs (in the poison gas-infected sections of M2 or M3 during the challenge) using event essence.

Not if you have q8 set ... adrenaline is not using essences.

I used the event essence but did not use up the event essence.

the way it works is i had green ess in ess slot 1 and yellow event ess in slot 2. I typically have green ess equipped, gather the mobs in one spot, switch to event ess, drop down the banner of war, and kill all the monsters. I make no attacks with yellow event ess. I use no essence with banner of war because banner of war is naturally a 0 essence skill, even though it can have a damage component, so i use no ess killing that mob.

Yep, I have 194 rat lures, have given up collecting lillies and not enough powder to craft . I have 6 valve stems and still no valve handle. Actually, I'm wondering why I'm trying, it's obvious I won't complete. Hmm Oh yes, it's because I can't kill that Djinn, Sharr Kharab, and I would really like to get some of this stuff out of my inventory.

The event was not so bad, it could be easily done, there was enough time even for casual players and there were some nice rewards.

There is something still need to ne corrected.
The drop downfall when in a Group is not fair, dso is a mmorpg, the second m is for multiplayer, remember it.

You are moving in the right direction imho.

I only did event about 1 1/2 hrs a day on average and finished both mini and main event 9 days early.

    Meatball sandwiches for everyone!

Good event. Finishable on multiple toons. Even got halfway done the mini on my second toon playing casually.

The constant change in map helped keep me motivated.

Hope to see more well thoughout events!!!!

I agree, this was actually one of the easiest events to finish. The event that people should be wining about more is the new moon event or the dark dwarf heist events. These ones require insane amounts of play time. Playing 3hrs a day I couldn't event get done with half of either event and I pretty strong like in top 10%.

Thank you for a great event. I finished both only thing I'm sorry about is I didn't get the cute little pet, got the axe skull one though. I like events like this fun to do. ^_~

I did the 1st part no probs, So what did I do wrong in the 2nd? I played 3 or 4 hours a day and just didn't get the drops, didn't see the event bosses and didn't get any pets. I guess it's playing normal/solo.
