    Hi,

I am new to the game and I read that combining gems actually lose stats.
I had 3 flawed Amethyst (which were +3 Hitpoints each) and when I combined them to a splintered ruby, it was only +4. So I actually lost +5 hp by combining them

So is it better to leave them as is instead of combining, if I free slots?

    Thanks

The point is to make the most out of your slots. Surely, you could stuff 4 Flawed Amethysts in an item and get 12 HP, but if you keep crafting, you could fill it with 4 Splintered ones, resulting in 16 HP, and so on. The system doesn't just add up the gems' value, because then it'd be broken.

If you have free slots, don't combine. Eventually you will find more gems and need to combine them since you will run out of slots. Don't waste anderments on creating more slots unless you know the item is a keeper.

Even craft the hitpoint gem to a +75 gem... love those. I have all radiant, every gem. as well two +80 resist gems. Use junk gear in pack to hold / craft them up till they are sufficient to match what you have in gear. After they are crafted up a lot, you have to do that to even think about combining them in gear. I really love the gem crafting...fun game, all good, takes time, but you'll really appreciate the gem after you have made them. You may also transfer them to another item if you wish. you'll always have them..:)

It was just a shocker to lose 5 HP. It seems so much to a young un like me :p
thanks for all the advice :)

I'll give you a practical example of how it works at end game. I had an item with nothing but +75 HP amethysts. I could have combined three of them to get a +100 and open 2 slots, but in doing so, I would have lost 125 HP. Instead, I sat, and waited, and collected. Yesterday, I got a +3 HP gem, and it snowballed all the way up to a second spare +75. Then, I was able to take those 2 spares and one of the ones on my armor, and combined them to a +100, gaining 25 HP as opposed to losing 125. It just took forever.

I'll echo what the others have said, Don't combine until you run out of space, but even then, don't combine until you have a gain, not a loss. Use white items with 4 (or 5) slots to store gems until you are ready to use them on your actual gear.
