Few questions, I'm on the PvE server which was recommended to me, but I see people with 'PVP' in their name, I assume PVP is still available on PvE server, or is all servers linked?.

Which items are worth buying as a new player in the IM?.

Lockpicks, where could I use these?
Any other advice/tips would be great.

Hi Biscuitx, welcome to the EN forums :)

Players have the option to turn on PvP, which will allow you to engage in battle against other in wilderness areas. More information on combat can be found HERE.

Lockpicks can be used to unlock Treasure Chests located in dungeons. In these chests, you will find a variety of rewards -- essences, gems, crystal of truth, equipment.

I would recommend for you to check out our DSO Guide for basic information about the game. Let us know if you have more questions.

I guess it's not common practice for Mods to suggest third party sites, so I'll step in and do that.
The DSO Wiki is also a great resource for many things, especially the complete catalog of unique items and their drop locations.
The Drakensang Optimizer will prove useful when creating different setups.

I can't think of any others, other than the twitter and facebook pages of DSO which occasionally post information about upcoming updates. Though, those posts are very vague; it's best to look in these forums for more info.

The most recyclable and useful items in the game are Gems. If there's anything worth buying, it's those. They help tons with improving stats.
I suggest you wait for gem sales to buy them. Wait for sales to buy anything, I should say, because 25% reduced prices will be worth the wait.
Another tip: stay at low levels while you gain Fame levels through PvP. The more you level up, the stronger the opponents and the harder it will get.

    Good luck and have fun.

also I'm a spellweaver, which gems would be most useful?

and can you tell me which gems are most useful for a ranger type too? much thanks ;-).

If only I had had the sense to ask questions such as yours and then somehow summons the patience to await, and/or search the forums, and pay attention to the response from such students of the game as theinfamous, spiro_spula, callisto and her partners 'the dreaded Mods':), torifas, _G_R_A_M_P_S_, -faeriequeen22-, Speer009, kasherinae, the 2 multi's, Perrush and others that I'm missing, it would have taken me 6 months to get where I'm at today instead of over a year. That said, study their response in regards to the game but be leary of their politics, especially that of our resident radicals such as -faeriequeen22- and callisto.:) Good luck and smooth sailing.

Heh I will do, I kinda got the hang of it, PVP side seems a bit hard, not used to the mechanics at all, hmm, is it worth upgrading low level items or buying gems for them?.

I wouldn't bother to much with upgrading low level items but gems or storage purchased will be with you and be an asset for as long as you play the game.

    @jthames awww thanks dude!! :):)

Well, the others did a good job with advises. About the upgrading items; don't buy glyphs for andermants. Melting useless colored items is a much better way - if you have enough glyphs, you can upgrade old items, but would be better to replace them with new ones as lvling goes pretty fast in the beginning. The ones you choose to upgrade - you can melt them later when you find another item to replace them with.
Andermants. Keep those for gems and inventory space - those things will always be with you (you can remove gems from the item you're using now and put it in the net one :) ). As for gems, wait for gem sales to buy those. :)
Crystals of Truth (cots).. you might wanna save some of those as well; it's unnecessary to identify legendary items or uniques at low lvl as you will replace those soon. Once you hit higher lvls, you will need plenty of cot (you can never have enough of them, sadly :D )
About PvP; don't worry much about that now, do PvP is your daily tells you to do so (always do daily quest for books! ), and a bit later also do some PvP - you don't wanna hit 40-45lvl being a very low lvl in there because it'll be much harder to lvl it up then.
To your question about what type of gems are useful for SW/RA - all gems are useful, even though onyxes and cyanites are a bit unpopular as you can get pretty good amounts of critical/armor from items. Go for rubies/sapphires, that's probably the best as those are hard to get.

I wrote too much. Going away. Hope this helps.

Upgrading items at low levels is fine as long as you remember to melt rather than sell the upgraded item once you find a suitable replacement and do not use ander for upgrading. Upgrading items increases their melting value proportionately to the investment, so after you melt them you get all the invested glyphs back. Mousing over an item will show its melting value.
The same goes for gems more or less, because you can extract them from your old items and stuff them into new gear, meaning that they stay with you for good like glyphs. However, extracting gems costs gold, so the process is not as efficient.

    Thank you @jthames :)

Ill throw in some more tips while I'm here.

Buying glyphs isn't worth it. If you use toilet paper rolls made of money, then you can probably afford to buy it.

I believe the Lost Truth event is coming up, which will reward approximately 3k CoTs through progress.

    Find an active guild.

If you are a ranged character, focus on left-side items. They are meant to be the offensive type (although, for some reason, they can give defensive stats) and will help you with your dps. Since ranged characters don't have to come into contact with enemies, they can focus on offensive stats and simply snipe them out. (DKs hate this. Trust me, I play a low level DK and the most annoying thing is fighting a hit-n-runner)

Search the forums a bit because there are a lot of topics that have already been discussed and it wouldn't be very productive to restate them.
This is the new forums, it hasn't been on for a long time so here's the link to the old forums, filled with tons of useful info. (If you have the patience to search it)

Biscuitx, the Mods are going to complain my post is not relevant to this thread or perhaps to this forum but if I promise to never do it again perhaps I'll get away with only a warning. Just want to add that I would be remiss in not warning you of the following: Per an old post of hers, -faeriequeen22- is a law student in an European, or perhaps an East European school, forgive me my poor memory. Where, however, is not particularity important, only that she's, I assume, an aspiring Lawyer. And in keeping the traditions of that profession alive and well, any PVP player or PVE monster that has ever prevailed against her in combat has been sued. :) If she wasn't one of the 'good guys' with such a terrific sense of humor I'd never have made all that up although she is a Law student. Anyway, hope you find what you need and hope to see you around for a long time. Just remember, tread lightly around you know who:). Holler if I can ever be of any help.

First hi and welcome to DSO.
Most of the things have already be said but just wanted to add a few things with uniques. Even though most uniques are useless once u get 1 or 2 lvl above them there are a few that really stick with you till the end. Amulet of Insight is one of them, lvl 13 I believe, which gives you 5% more xp for every monster you defeat and works till you get to 45. That combined with jewel of insight( if you get lucky with daily login bonuses to get it) will give you 10% xp per kill which is really awesome and hard to find. Another one would be the Grimmag's Starry Robe at around lvl 35 which gives you 271 armor +20mana and 1 mana per sec regeneration. This is another treasure you might want to keep until you get something better to replace it at higher levels. The drop rates for uniques is +/-5 lvls from the lvl of the unique you're trying to get . Usually main bosses at dungeons have higher chances for dropping (Not confirmed just from experience about the bosses).

As for Gems on the attack side it really depends on your play style. Some ppl like speed some dmg. I'd hold of on buying any now until you tried out the game a bit more, even the class for that matter as gems are not transferable from one character tot he other.
    Good Luck!

hahahahahaha I laughed so hard on this one, you're adorable! xD
yeeee when people kill me in pvp I shout at them - I'll see ya in court!! :D
Now we should stop spamming before they see it hihi

1 more thing which is helpful; this 5% xp gem, everybody gets it the first time they reach 5 days in a row.. or not 5, I'm not sure, but I am sure that everyone gets it that 1 time and there's no other way of getting it, so you might wanna keep it with you in case of new lvls
