If you play on the browser, it doesn't preload. It only loads the files it needs when it needs them. Because I spend most of my time on one character and in higher level maps, I don't usually need the inventory icons for all four classes or the armor skins for all the lower level armors. For that reason, my DSOtemp folder is usually 200-300 MB as opposed to 500 MB.

_Baragain_ is spot on. To play DSO with minimal data usage, play in the browser. If you prefer to play with the thin client, get it to the full preload once (so that it doesn't keep re-trying the download between the minimal and full level), then refuse to update the client when prompted in the future.

Because the programming is so poor, you'll see some activity that looks like it is starting to re-load the thin client each day, but really it's just comparing your downloaded level to the server level, so only a minimal amount of data is actually passed over the connection.

I haven't tracked my data usage in-game for a long time now (since June 2014 I've done very little playing), but when I did track it, the data usage varied depending on what/how I was playing, and 4-8 MB per hour was typical.
