I have been playing for about 3 weeks now. This is my ranger and i have no clue as to what im doing lol. I come from the land of diablo2 and my gut tells me to go high defense and high hitpoints, but Idk if this works here haha!! Lmk guys :)

High lifepoints is a good goal to have. As a ranger, you want to have as high damage/critical damage as you can since it is a burst damage dealer (mark with green arrow/hunting traps then use Precision Shot).

For me personally, I like using short bows. It eats essence faster, but the game just feels more fluid when you can execute attacks quicker. Getting a nice pair of Extraorinary Boots with all run speed enchantments helps as well (especially if you plan on doing PvP).

There are many other things to consider, and I'm sure other members will chime in (as well as a moderator moving your thread to the Ranger class section of the forums for more in-depth analysis). Welcome to the land of Duria!! It can be chaotic, but I've been around for almost 2 years now and still enjoying it :).

So critical hit rate doesn't matter as much as critical damage? And should I be focusing more on hit points vs defense??

Critical hit rate is also important, having a balanced character is a good idea. For some reason, though, Ranger precision shots (as with Spellweaver fireballs) tend to critical hit more often than any other skill, so that's why I think critical hit rate isn't quite as important.

For the most part, you can get enough armor from your right side gear, so investing in gem stones for diamonds (resistance), and amethysts (hitpoints) is what I recommend.

I'd say you have a pretty balanced character for being free to play, but you have to ask what your goals are. Are you wanting to continue leveling your character? Do you plan on investing money in this game?

You can also work on getting an extraordinary shield as well, but have a quiver as backup for increased critical hit rate when things aren't quite as hairy.

If your goal is advancing fast (meaning reaching the max level as quickly as possible), your defensive properties are mostly negligible; the reason for this being your ability to kill everything before it even reaches you. Basically, if you have enough damage, the whole right side of your equipment window is useless, since in 99% of all cases, you can simply work your way around being hit by using your trap/net/wolves, thus avoiding any damage.
For that matter, I advise you to switch your shield for a quiver, as it has quite an impact on your damage output. As soon as you hit 45 / start PvPing, defensive values will become an issue. Imo before that, every crystal used for identifying defensive items is wasted.

Your Critical Hit Rate is low. At your level that's less than 10% which renders your Critical Damage useless. Without Crit Rate, which determines how often you crit, critical damage sucks because it determines how much your crit multiplies your hit, and if you are not having any critical hits, your crit damage isn't used... makes sense?

Your defense looks good. Damage is average. Speed is low; I suggest a Shortbow and gems, specifically Sapphires and Rubies. Tip: wait for gem sale to get those as it will save you lots of andermant.

If you want to PvP, I would get a legendary Shortbow and Shield. Get extraordinaries to for the stats that you want or need. PvP is difficult at your level because there will be a lot of heavily geared and gemmed players that have higher Fame level than you. This leaves little chance for you to win, especially since you will barely be able to land hits with your longbow. You should PvP as early as possible because higher level arena gets increasingly more difficult.

If you want to be PvE-only for now, your defense will allow you to tank certain monster or at least stay in place to shoot for a while instead of running around to avoid getting hit and at the same time attacking what's trying to kill you nonstop. (kiting) You still need Critical Hit Rate though because it increases your DPS by a lot. Check the DSO Optimizer and try different stats to see what would work best.

Overall a pretty good character though :)

    Take care.

You can carry around a quiver if inventory allows, a white one will do for start. Switch it with your buckler when you are on a familiar map or in a group and know that you will not be taking much damage. It will more than double your critical hit rate, resulting in more hits with double damage. However, your armor will suffer and you will have nothing to block with, so make sure that you will not be taking much damage.
Also, life is more important than armor because armor reduces damage from physical attacks only, which is useless against some ranged monsters, bosses and Spellweavers. In addition, the ancient knowledge tree increases your life by a certain percentage, giving you a bonus on top of the total, meaning that it applies to each life bonus (an item with +100 HP will actually give +125 HP if you have maxed out knowledge).
