Unique Items question

What is the difference in the "TIER" level of item ?

Got a Tier 1 shield tonight but wodering what the difference is from Tier 2 or Tier 3...

Most unique items these days have variable stats. For example, if an item has armor, it may have anywhere between 300 and 500 armor in the Tier 1 piece. Then, the Tier 2 item may have between 500 and 600. Finally, the Tier 3 item has guaranteed stats that are usually the max for a particular item's Tier 2 version, and may introduce a set bonus for having more than one Tier 3 piece from a particular set. Sometimes the higher tier items can drop randomly, but most of the time, you need to craft them from the lower tier versions of the items.

Take, for example, the DK's torso from Sigrismar.

As you can see, the Tier 1 item has lower range stats. The Tier 2 item has a better range of stats and it introduces a cool down reduction. The final form has the max possible stats of the Tier 3 item, a better cool down reduction, and the possibility to combine it with the Tier 3 weapon decoration for even more bonuses.

With respect to the shield you picked up, you can see the stats of the Tier 3 shield on the Event tap (viewed by pressing 'E') along with the set bonuses, or you can see the range of stats for the Tier 1 shield on the page where you pick your difficulty for the event.
