What is going on with item drops?

In the bad old days, you used to get items on logging in that were too low to bother with, as were some of the drops from monsters. Then BP fixed it - Hooray! Items matched your level, so you could use them.

Suddenly, logging-in items are lower than my level again - useless except to sell - and I'm picking up items 1 or 2 levels higher than me from monsters on solo runs.

Is this a bug, or a deliberate return to the bad old days ?

BTW, magic items in my pack are suddenly screwed too. If you move them around, the question mark gets separated form the item...... 8o(

 

I've seen the ? in weird places too, outside of the items completely.
It could be related to the problems in spacing; sometimes the items in the locker wouldn't fit in the locker frame, because of an extra space between columns. Other times the items were smaller, and there was an extra space on the right. Once the items in the right column were partial chopped off by the locker frame.
Exciting times.

@versrat Are you still leveling up? Items generally have a preset level requirement and may round up or down to your level. If you stop by the local merchant, you can get an idea of what level your "level-scaled" items may unlock.
